2020 Ford Explorer
Fully redesigned for 2020, the Ford Explorer is built on a new platform to improve its handling and boost its towing capacity. The three-row SUV sits six people and has a lengthy list of standard safety features and a strong lineup of engine options, making it a solid choice for families.
Trim Levels
The 2020 Ford Explorer comes in four trim levels: XLT, Limited, ST, and Platinum. The Explorer also comes in a hybrid option. There are 10 color options for the all-new exterior design, which continues to use steel for its body panels. The ST trim has blacked-out wheels and a unique quad-tip exhaust, while the Platinum has a chrome grille and wheels.
Engine
Just like there are four trims, the 2020 Explorer has four powertrain options. The base turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces 300 horsepower. The ST and Platinum trims come with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine that produces 400 and 365 horsepower, respectively. The other engine option is a hybrid variety found on the Limited trim, and this engine is a 3.3-liter V-6 along with an electric motor to produce 318 horsepower. All engines come with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Performance
When it comes to gas mileage, the 2020 Explorer achieves one of the best among nonhybrids of this size. With rear-wheel drive, the vehicle gets an EPA-estimated 21 miles per gallon (mpg) and 28 mpg on the highway. With four-wheel drive, numbers decrease by 1 mpg. The twin-turbo V-6 engines achieve an estimated 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.
Properly equipped, the Explorer can tow up to 5,600 pounds. This number is higher than the previous year's model and of most others in its class.
Interior
All Explorer trims offer plenty of plush features, starting with the base trim, which comes standard with cloth upholstery, tri-zone automatic climate control, and second-row captain's chairs with power-assist folding. The Limited trim includes heated and ventilated front seats as well as a heated steering wheel, while the ST trim features leather seats and the top-of-the-line Platinum trim has a leather-wrapped interior.
For infotainment, the Explorer comes standard with an 8-inch SYNC 3 system, satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, four USB ports, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Available upgrades include a 12-speaker audio system and wireless device charging.
Boasting a generous amount of cargo space, the 2020 Explorer has 18.2 cubic feet behind the third row, and behind the second row, you get 47.9 cubic feet. Folding down all the rear seats gives you 87.8 cubic feet. To help you store larger items, the vehicle comes standard with a power liftgate and an optional hands-free liftgate. You can also use an optional cargo management system, which includes storage bins underneath the floor.
Safety Features
The 2020 Explorer comes with a bevy of safety features, many of which are found in the Co-Pilot360 package. The standard features found in this package include a pre-collision system with forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, and rear cross-traffic alert. Also standard is Ford's MyKey, which lets you set audio and speed limits for secondary drivers. Optional safety features include adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree parking camera, and rain-sensitive windshield wipers.
