Gentleman Playing Golf

Situated about halfway between Birmingham, Alabama, and Atlanta, Georgia, the Alabama city of Heflin is relatively small with a population of around 3,000 people. But don’t let its small size fool you as there’s plenty to do in and around this area. If you’re in the mood to play a round of golf near Heflin, take a look at these four courses.

  1. Cane Creek Golf Course

Found in nearby Anniston, Cane Creek Golf Course offers one of the most challenging courses in northeastern Alabama. Originally built in 1942 by architect George Cobb, the course underwent a renovation in 1970 to convert it from a nine-hole course into an 18-hole one. Today the championship golf course measures 7,049 yards from the back tees and 5,186 yards from the forward tees. There’s a creek that winds through the landscaping and brings water into 12. Golfers must also navigate around the 27 bunkers strategically placed throughout the public course.

  1. Cider Ridge Golf Course

An award-winning golf course in nearby Oxford, the Cider Ridge Golf Course is widely known as one of the best courses in the state. Golfadvisor.com named the course as one of the top 50 courses under $50. More than 100 years ago, the property was once home to the Melon Apple Orchard that grew 11,000 bushels of apples and produced more than 20,000 gallons of apple cider annually.

Since then, the property has changed hands, and Bill Bergin designed the course, which opened in 2002. It underwent a major renovation in 2010 where sand bunkers and course drainage were addressed. Now golfers can experience mountain-style golf as it’s nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The 18-hole course amasses 6,946 yards.

  1. Indian Oaks Community Golf Course

An 18-hole traditional course also located in Anniston, the Indian Oaks Community Golf Course features 6,549 yards of golf from the longest tees on 130 acres of scenic, rolling hills. Streams run through three of its holes and several lakes dot the rest of the public course. Designed by Willard C. Byrd in 1976, the course underwent a renovation and recently reopened to the public.

  1. Pine Hill Country Club

Yet another course located in Anniston, the Pine Hill Country Club is an 18-hole public golf course. Designed by Bill Scarborough, the course opened in 1962 and has since become a local favorite. It encompasses 6,191 yards from the furthest tee and has a slope rating of 127. Golfers enjoy the course’s stunning views of rolling hills and mature pine trees while playing on the course and traversing around its seven lakes. One of the more memorable holes is the 280-yard par-4 10th hole, in which golfers try to drive their ball onto the green without hitting the water.

Whether you’re searching for a casual 18-hole course that you can bring your entire family to, looking for a challenging championship-caliber course, or desiring a course somewhere in between, the area surrounding the city of Heflin has you covered. Spend an afternoon at one of these courses, all of which provide you with stunning views.
